Nancy’s Story Towards Habitat Homeownership

My name is Nancy, I stand here incredibly thankful to share a little bit about my journey with Habitat for Humanity. I arrived in Eagle County in 1996 at the age of 5. I attended school in the Valley; Elementary, Middle, High School and College. I am now 34 years old and mother of 3 children. Before I partnered with Habitat, I dreamed of having a safe, stable place to call home for my children and me; a place where we could grow, feel secure, and build memories. Like many families, the road hasn’t always been easy. We lost our home during covid and all I could think about was what would happen if we had to move from this valley. Moving is not easy, you leave behind friends, family, jobs and an amazing community. After going back and forth, I made the decision to move back into my parents’ house. We took only what we needed. In four plastic bins we packed clothing, shoes and a few items we needed for school and work.

There were many times when the dream of homeownership felt out of reach. Habitat for Humanity gave us something more than just hope. They gave us an opportunity. From the moment I was accepted into the program, I felt a sense of community and support. The amazing support and guidance we receive from the staff is incredible. They have made this process very smooth and incredibly exciting. Whether it is through construction, volunteering at the ReStore, assisting with community events or attending workshops on homeownership, Habitat has shown me that no matter what your experience or skill level is, there’s always a way to give back and be involved.

Habitat isn’t just handing me a key—they are inviting me to be part of building my future. I get to work on the construction of my home. I am also helping build the homes of other future homeowners; just like myself, reaching for the same dream. Every time I volunteer, I learn new skills, face new challenges, and gain a whole new appreciation for what it means to build something with your own hands. It’s incredibly exciting to witness the progress of each home and see the joy on the faces of the families eagerly waiting to move into their forever homes.

But even more than the wood and nails, what truly builds these homes is the love, compassion, and hard work of the volunteers, staff, and fellow families. Each person who shows up on site, whether it is for a few hours or every week, rain or shine—make a lasting impact. We aren’t just building homes; we are helping build a family’s foundation for a better life.

I want to thank Habitat for Humanity for believing in me and giving my family the tools to succeed. Thank you to the volunteers, donors, and staff who pour your energy and heart into this mission. You may not realize it, but you are changing my life and the life of every future homeowner. Through this process, I’m gaining more than just a home—I’m gaining knowledge, confidence, and a community of people who genuinely care. I continue to meet volunteers who give their time and hearts to help me succeed, and I’m forever grateful for their kindness.

This home means stability, it means peace, and most importantly, it means a future filled with possibility. Habitat has shown me the power of community, the value of hard work, and what can happen when people come together with love and purpose.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
