HABITAT HOMEOWNER APPLICATION PROCESS
The number of candidates selected varies year to year and is in direct relationship to the number of homes we are currently able to build. All applications are thoroughly reviewed by our Family Selection Committee and applicants will be notified throughout the application process.
Apply for a Habitat Home
We are now accepting applications for the Habitat homeownership program. The deadline to apply is September 30th. Download an application below.
Steps to Habitat Homeownership
One step at a time, you can become a homeowner.
Step 1: Qualify
Do you qualify for Habitat homeownership? See selection criteria here.
Step 2: Apply
Regardless if you meet the criteria or not for the Habitat homeownership program, we encourage you to submit an application.
You must return the fully completed application and provide all required supplemental documents by the Application Period deadline.
Note: Some of our homeowners were denied the first time they applied due to outstanding collections and debts, income that was below our limits or other issues. They successfully improved their eligibility, reapplied and were accepted into the program.
Step 3: Application Review & Home Visits
All applications will be reviewed by Habitat Vail Valley’s Family Selection committee, a group of community volunteers, Habitat staff members and current Habitat homeowners.
All info provided in your application will be verified and a member of the committee will be in touch with you while your application is being evaluated.
Of the qualified applicants, the families with the greatest need will be selected. Applicants that are not selected are encouraged to reapply in the future.
Step 4: Selection
After the Homeowner Selection Committee approves an applicant’s eligibility it presents recommended applicants to the HFHVV Board of Directors for approval.
Step 5: Partnership
If selected for Habitat homeownership, you will begin completion of 250 “sweat equity” volunteer hours (per adult) and will participate in homeowner education classes.
Final Step: Homeownership
Upon completion of all sweat equity hours and verification of down payment funds, you become a proud Habitat homeowner, move into your home, and begin paying your mortgage.
You will also participate in a dedication ceremony held when your home is completed.
“My home means a new beginning and a brighter future. My son and I now have a stable home, not just a house, a future together in a place where we don’t have to move once or twice a year.”
~Laura Gonzalez, Homeowner
